Are you a bibliophile with a huge
book collection? If you love to read, you know the challenge of storing your
book collection. If you're not the type of reader to re-read your books, what
should you do with all of your physical books?
If you're trying to declutter your
home or getting ready to move, use our tips for downsizing your book
collection.
1.
Sell Them
Why not try to get a little bit of
money for your books? After all, you might have a substantial amount of money
invested in your book collection. You can try sites like Cash For Your Books, sell them at garage sales, put
them on social media marketplace sites, or even sell them online.
Many used books stores may also
purchase them or you can sell them at a consignment sale. There are plenty of
different outlets to sell your books, although you may only get a small
percentage of what you paid for them.
2.
Donate Them
If you're looking to get rid of your
books quickly, donating them is a great idea. Libraries will often take donated
books to sell in a used book sale. You can also donate to a thrift store,
nursing home, or even a correctional facility.
If there's a "little free
library" in your area, consider putting a few in the library and exchange
them for some new books to read. Many of the "buy nothing" groups on
social media also have fellow book lovers who will love the opportunity to get
some new books.
3.
Keep What You Love
While you may not re-read every book
you own again, feel free to keep your favorites. If you love a book and have read
it multiple times, give it a permanent place on your bookshelf.
If you have a lot of children's
books as well, you may want to hold on to some of those for your future kids or
to pass them on to your child as they get older and have their own children. A
favorite childhood book is a unique gift to pass on to them when they're
expecting their own child.
4.
Go Digital
Once you clean out your books, it
might be time to think about going digital. E-readers, tablets, and even phones
can be used to read and store your favorite books. While an e-reader doesn't
give you the same feeling of a book in your hand and turning the pages, they
allow you to have access to many books without cluttering up your home.
Libraries also allow you to check out
e-copies of books as well, so you can save yourself some money by using the
library.
5.
Set Up Boundaries for Moving Forward
If going digital isn't your thing,
limit yourself to a certain number of books in your home. Instead of buying new
or used books, utilize your library! Allow yourself to purchase copies of books
that you really love and that you'll read again. Otherwise, try to minimize
your purchases or commit to passing on the book as soon as you are done with it
or when your shelves become overwhelmed.
Declutter
Your Book Collection Today
If your book collection is starting
to take over your home, it's time to think about decluttering. Go through your
books and decide which to keep, which to sell, and which to donate. Then, set
yourself some parameters for purchasing books in the future, and even consider
investing in an e-reader.
